The Eucharist is the great gift of Jesus Christ to the Church. It is His enduring presence among us and the most perfect gift of Himself to us.
As Catholics, we understand that the Eucharist (Holy Communion) is really and truly the Body and Blood of Christ, and that through our reception of the Eucharist, we acknowledge our unity with the Lord, with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and with one another. Because we make this triple profession of belief, the Eucharist in our tradition is limited to those who are members of the Catholic Church.
We encourage Catholics to prepare well for the reception of Holy Communion and to ensure that they do so without serious or mortal sin. If you are aware that serious sin exists, sacramental Confession takes place before receiving the Lord in Holy Communion. It is still a discipline of the Church for one to fast for an hour before receiving Holy Communion.
